Nature on the coast

A wide variety of nature can be seen and experienced along the coast. Whether you simply want to bask in the sun and swim in a calm cove or try your hand at surfing, there is something for every type of traveler to enjoy.

Lagoons and protected areas

There are several notable lagoons along the Oaxacan coast. Lagoons are an incredibly biodiverse habitat, meaning that they are home to a wide range of species. They are an essential part of the ecosystem along the Oaxacan coast and are an intriguing place for locals and visitors alike.

The three main lagoons to visit are Laguna Manialtepec, Laguna Ventanilla, and Lagunas de Chacahua. Laguna Manialtepec is located just north of Puerto Escondido and many flock to the area at night to see a rare natural phenomenon: bioluminescense. On the darkest of nights, it can be seen the best as you’ll notice blue light emanating from the lagoon as it moves. It’s also best to visit during the rainy season if possible as that’s the best time to see the most intense blue caused by this incredible phenomenon.

However, many birdwatchers and nature lovers also enjoy visiting Laguna Manialtepec daily. Plenty of tour operators feature guided kayak trips in which they’ll point out some of the nature in the area.

Logically, La Ventanilla is the town that houses the Laguna Ventanilla. It is located close to the popular tourist town of Mazunte. This community is committed to preserving its natural resources. It’s a cooperative that is known for its excellence in ecotourism. Tourists often come here to see one of the most popular inhabitants of the lagoon: crocodiles. About 400 visitors come daily, many of whom take guided boat tours to learn about these ancient and fascinating creatures.

Chacahua is a popular spot for many free-spirit travelers to truly get in touch with nature. Cell service and internet connection are limited in Chacahua, which is a large part of its allure to many. The Lagunas de Chacahua are a national park, meaning that they a a preserved area. It has received this title because of the important species that it houses. Notably, the Lagunas de Chacahua National Park houses three different types of marine turtles: Laud, Carey, and Golfina.

Huatulco National Park

Nine bays and over thirty beaches make up the Hutalco National Park. There are about 9,000 species of plants in the park, both in the mangroves and forests along the coastline that is also included in the protected area. There are coral reefs along the coast that make for some of the best snorkeling along the coast. The area is another birdwatcher’s paradise as it is home to about 700 species of birds. Reptiles are another group that make up a large portion of the fauna in the area with more than 400 species native to the land. Of course, turtles, dolphins, and many other species live along the coastal waters. The coast also has its visitors–many whales and birds are migratory and can be seen during certain times of the year.

For those visiting Huatulco, you’ll be frequenting the national park constantly as it makes up all of the best tourist spots. So, while Huatulco is considered a tourist town, it also has ample nature for its visitors to immerse themselves in. Popular activities for those looking to connect with the beautiful nature surrounding them include hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, biking, or boat tours. Or, if you just want to hang out at a beautiful beach, you’ll have plenty of options to do so. And, unlike many other areas along the coast, the bays in Huatulco are great for swimming!

With about 16 indigenous groups living in Oaxaca, there is a wide variety of cultural practices taking place along the coast. As a visitor, learning about this rich and unique culture is a great way to feel truly connected to the area.

Zapotecs make up the largest portion of the indigenous people in Oaxaca. The Mixtecs aren’t far behind as they are the second-largest group in the area. These cultures and nature go hand-in-hand as they both place importance on respecting the land, as well as using natural resources in a part of daily life (for things such as medical practices). Additionally, the rich indigenous communities found along the coast also contribute to the artisanal goods found there, such as pottery and other handicrafts.
