La Arribada in La Escobilla: A Natural Wonder

The protected sanctuary that receives thousands and thousands of turtles each year

La Escobilla is a beach located on the Oaxacan coast. It’s certainly a stunning beach, La Escobilla is better known for its rich biodiversity. Namely, it is home to a natural phenomenon: the arrival of sea turtles during what is known as “la arribada.”

La Arribada occurs each year between June and December. At this time, thousands of turtles go back to their nesting grounds. The event is truly magical as the beach is covered by the sea turtles. Of course, the occurrence has a major ecological impact, specifically in the conservation efforts of sea turtles and the local community’s role in it.

What Is “La Arribada”?

The term “arribada” translates to “arrival,” and it refers to the synchronized nesting behavior exhibited by large populations of sea turtles. During this extraordinary event, female Olive Ridley turtles (a species in danger of extinction) gather in massive numbers along the beaches of La Escobilla to lay their eggs. What’s more impressive is that these turtles are actually returning to the same beach on which they themselves hatched.

The exact timing and frequency of la arribada can vary, often influenced by environmental factors such as lunar cycles, ocean temperatures, and coastal currents. The most significant nesting activity occurs during the full moon when light conditions might facilitate nesting behaviors.

Indeed, sea turtles are quite impressive in their feat to return to their hatching ground. Since La Escobilla is a nesting place for so many sea turtles (tens of thousands), it has become a protected area–La Escobilla Sanctuary. There are currently 12 known arribada beaches for Olive Ridley turtles, however, La Escobilla receives the highest number of Olive Ridley sea turtle nestings each year.

Ecological Importance

La Escobilla functions not only as a nesting site, but also as a crucial habitat for these threatened species. The arribada serves various ecological purposes.

Nesting in large groups helps women turtles avoid predation. The sheer volume of turtles can confuse potential predators, increasing the likelihood of more eggs hatching.

Additionally, sea turtles play an essential role in marine ecosystems. As they browse on seagrasses and feed on jellyfish, they help maintain the balance of these ecosystems, promoting healthier marine environments. This is why their conservation is so important, and la arribada is crucial to it.

Finally, the phenomenon of la arribada also provides invaluable insights for marine biologists and ecologists studying sea turtle behavior, breeding patterns, and conservation methodologies.

Community and Conservation Efforts

La Arribada affects not only nature, but also the local community in La Escobilla. While hunting turtles for their eggs and meat was once the overwhelming culture, that’s drastically changed. Now, with many laws to protect sea turtles, the locals have had to adapt economically. As such, over the years, residents have recognized the potential of eco-tourism and have adapted accordingly.

  • Local Involvement: Many community members are actively involved in conservation efforts, working with non-governmental organizations dedicated to protecting sea turtles. They assist in monitoring nests, protecting eggs from poachers and predators, and guiding tourists who come to witness this incredible event.
  • Eco-Tourism: The boom in eco-tourism during nesting seasons has led to increased revenue for local businesses. Tourists flock to La Escobilla not only to see the turtles but also to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the region, often booking local tours and staying at community-run accommodations.
  • Education and Outreach: Community organizations conduct educational programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of conservation and the threats faced by sea turtles. These initiatives engage both locals and tourists, fostering a sense of stewardship and responsibility toward the environment.

How to experience this first-hand?

Witnessing la arribada at La Escobilla is a unique and unforgettable experience for anyone. Although there are arribadas all year round, the massive arribadas that bring together 1,000 to 3,000 sea turtles are an event that can last up to three continuous days.

It is certainly difficult to plan the sighting of this spectacular event. The closest thing to that is to connect with a local tour operator agency. They have direct agreements with the community and therefore receive the announcement from the first day of la arribada. So if a certified tour guide tells you that la arribada has begun, make arrangements at that moment to embark on the adventure.

La Escobilla is a protected area, you can be sure that the tours and activities available in this area do not harm the turtles or their nesting practices.

Nature’s Magic

La Arribada at La Escobilla is not just an ecological event; it symbolizes resilience, community action, and the interconnectedness of nature and culture. By witnessing this extraordinary phenomenon, visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the natural world while contributing to the well-being of the community and the protection of endangered species.
