Huatulco on Wheels:
The Perfect Destination to Experience Cycling between the Sea and the Jungle.
Located on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast, the Bays of Huatulco are not simply a destination for rest. For those fortunate enough to inhabit this paradise, cycling has become a fundamental part of daily life and one of the favorite activities of the community. This corner is the perfect place to merge physical effort with absolute contemplation of nature.
Waking up to the sunrise over the coast, while the first rays of sunlight reveal the intense blue of the sea, is one of the simple pleasures that this paradise offers. As Huatulco is a small and friendly town, the bicycle is not only a sporting item; It is a way of life and the ideal means of transportation. A single tour of its avenues is enough to notice how the local community embraces the two wheels in a natural way. A common scene in everyday life is to observe young people enthusiastically pedaling to school, working men who commute calmly to their days, people who use it to go to the gym or neighbors doing their daily errands. For the inhabitants of Huatulco, getting out of the car and getting on the pedal is the best way to stay present, enjoy the weather and connect with the warmth of its own people.
But beyond the daily utility, residents find its spectacular landscapes the perfect playground for sports. For those who are passionate about speed and asphalt, road cycling in Huatulco allows you to enjoy panoramic views of great visual impact. The flowing route of the Bays guides local cyclists between the Santa Cruz, Chahué and Tangolunda viewpoints, and even continues to Playa La Bocana, where in approx. 12 km each hill conquered rewards the effort with a memorable postcard with the sea in the background. The circuit to test yourself and get to know the topography of Huatulco is the locally known “Scenic Route”, which begins in the Bay of Santa Cruz and surrounds the beaches of Maguey and La Entrega.
On the other hand, the real disconnect for mountain biking (MTB) awaits on the trails that cross the Huatulco National Park and lead you to the iconic Cacaluta Beach. This protected reserve is home to dirt roads mostly covered by the shade of native trees, where bird watching and wildlife watching occur on the roadside. The rainy season is a favorite for locals to spend the most time cycling within and around the National Park, as the vegetation comes alive and is painted an amazing green.
This deep cycling vocation and pride in its surroundings have made Huatulco the epicenter of major events and annual races that attract athletes from all over the world, also putting local athletes to the test:
- AsDeporte Triathlon (Road): During the month of June, the bays are transformed to receive athletes from Mexico and around the world.
